Costs and pricing

Back door cost: what a new fitted back door costs

    Short answer

A new uPVC back door from us starts from £799 fully fitted, and a composite back door starts from £1,099 fully fitted. That covers the door and frame made to measure, removal and disposal of the old one, fitting and making good. Glazing, colour, a cat flap, a stable configuration and the condition of the opening can move the price, which is fixed in writing after a free survey.

    The two starting prices

Most back doors we fit are either uPVC or composite. A uPVC door is the best value way to replace a draughty or tired back door, and suits sheltered doors and everyday use. A composite door has a solid core and a tougher skin, so it is more rigid, feels heavier when it closes and copes better with exposure.

    What the fitted price includes

Fully fitted should mean you pay one figure for the whole job. When you compare quotes, check each of these is included rather than charged later.

    • A free measured survey of the opening
    • The door and frame made to measure
    • Removal and disposal of the old door and frame
    • Fitting, fixing and sealing inside and out
    • Making good around the new frame
    • A written, fixed quote before you commit

    What moves the price up

The starting price is for a standard door. These are the choices and conditions that most often change the figure.

    • Glazing: more glass, decorative patterns or laminated security glass
    • A cat flap or pet door built into the door
    • Colour: solid colours, woodgrain finishes and dual colour
    • A stable configuration, with top and bottom leaves that open separately
    • Side panels or a wider opening
    • Hardware upgrades such as handle styles or extra security
    • The frame and opening: rotten sills, a damaged lintel or an out-of-square opening

    Frame condition and the opening

Back doors on older houses often sit in openings that have moved, or above sills that have rotted under an old timber frame. We look at this at survey, so anything that needs putting right is on the quote rather than discovered on the day. A sound, square opening keeps the job at its simplest.

Is composite worth the extra at the back?

If your back door faces an alley, a side passage or an open field, or takes the weather, composite is often worth the difference for its rigidity and resistance to forcing. If the door is sheltered and used mainly to reach the garden, a good uPVC door with a multipoint lock does the job well for less. Our composite back doors page goes into that choice in more detail.

    Comparing back door quotes fairly

Two back door quotes can look far apart simply because they cover different things. Put them side by side on the same basis: the same material, the same glazing, the same colour and the same hardware. Then check that removal, disposal and making good are included in both, and that each price is fixed in writing rather than an estimate that can change on the day.

A lower figure that leaves out disposal or making good is rarely the cheaper job in the end.
