Are uPVC doors secure? A plain comparison
Short answer
A modern uPVC door is secure when it has a reinforced frame, a multi point lock that engages fully, an anti snap cylinder and internally beaded glazing. The material matters less than those parts. Older uPVC doors are often let down by a basic euro cylinder or worn hinges, which can usually be upgraded without replacing the whole door.
Why security depends on the parts, not the plastic
uPVC on its own is not a strong material, which is why good uPVC doors have steel reinforcement inside the frame and sash. That reinforcement gives the locks, hinges and keeps something solid to fix into. A door that looks the same from the outside can be much weaker if the reinforcement is thin or missing where the lock sits.
When people compare uPVC door security online they are really comparing specifications. Two uPVC doors can perform very differently, and a well specified uPVC door can outperform a poorly made door in a heavier material.
The five things to check
Whether you are buying new or checking the door you already have, look at these:
- Cylinder: an anti snap cylinder rated TS007 3 star or equivalent, not a basic euro cylinder.
- Locking: a multi point lock with hooks or rollers that fully engage when you lift the handle.
- Glazing: beads on the inside, so the glass cannot be removed from outside.
- Hinges: firmly fixed and adjusted so the door closes square and does not drop.
- Testing: doors made to PAS 24 have been tested against common methods of forced entry.
uPVC compared with composite
A composite door has a thicker, solid core slab, which gives it more mass and rigidity and a feel many people prefer on a front door. A uPVC door is lighter and more affordable. With the same quality of lock, cylinder and fitting, both can be secure; the composite gives you a heavier slab, the uPVC gives you good security at a lower price.

Common weak points on older uPVC doors
The most common weakness we see on older doors is the cylinder. Many doors fitted years ago used a standard euro cylinder that can be snapped. Swapping it for an anti snap cylinder is a quick, affordable improvement. The next most common issue is a door that has dropped on its hinges, so the lock no longer engages fully and someone has got used to forcing the handle. That strains the gearbox and leaves the door less secure than it should be.
Glazing beads on the outside, gaps around the frame and worn handles are the other things to look at. None of these automatically mean the door needs replacing.
Upgrade or replace?
If the frame is sound and the door closes square, upgrading the cylinder and adjusting the hinges gets you most of the benefit. Replacement makes more sense when the frame has moved, the reinforcement is poor, the glass is beaded externally and cannot be changed, or the door has become draughty as well as insecure. Everyday habits
The best lock only works when it is used. Lift the handle and turn the key every time, even when you are only in the garden. Keep keys out of sight of the door and letterbox, and add outside lighting at the back of the house. These cost little and close the gaps that a good door cannot.
