Composite door guarantees and warranties: what they should cover

    Short answer

A composite door guarantee should cover two separate things: the product itself (the slab, frame, locking mechanism and sealed glass units) and the workmanship of the fitting. Ask who stands behind each part, what is excluded and what you must do to keep it valid. Every door we fit comes with our 10-year insurance-backed guarantee through our Assure certification, so the cover does not depend on any one company still trading.

Why composite doors need a closer look

A composite door is built from several parts made by different suppliers. The slab usually has a reinforced skin over an insulated core, the outer frame is normally uPVC, the multi point lock and cylinder come from a hardware maker, and the glass is a sealed unit. When people search for a composite door warranty they often assume one document covers all of that equally. In practice cover can be split between the door manufacturer, the hardware brand and the installer.

That matters because the common faults on composite doors sit in different places. A door that drops and catches is usually a hinge or fitting issue. A lock that gets stiff is hardware. A misted glazing panel is a failed sealed unit. Fading or a lifting skin is a slab issue. Knowing which part is which tells you who you should be talking to if something goes wrong.

What a good composite door guarantee covers

Look for clear wording on each of the following. If a quote only says the door is guaranteed without saying what that includes, ask for the terms in writing before you sign.

    • The slab: warping, delamination of the skin and defects in the core.
    • The frame: cracking, discolouring or movement not caused by damage.
    • Locking: failure of the multi point gearbox, keeps and handles in normal use.
    • Glass: sealed units that mist between the panes.
    • Colour and finish: fading beyond what the maker describes as normal weathering.
    • Workmanship: leaks at the frame, a door fitted out of square, and gaps or draughts from poor fitting.

    What is normally excluded

Almost every composite door guarantee excludes accidental damage, forced entry, and damage from things like dogs scratching the skin or a car reversing into the frame. Wear on moving parts from years of heavy use is usually treated differently from a manufacturing defect. Changes made by someone else, such as a locksmith drilling the slab or a DIY letterbox fitted after installation, can void cover on the part that was altered.

Exclusions are not a reason to walk away from a product. They are simply the terms you are buying on, and a reputable fitter will explain them plainly rather than hiding them in small print.

    Insurance-backed versus fitter-only cover

A fitter-only guarantee is a promise from the company that installed the door. It is usually the quickest way to get a small fault sorted, but it depends on that business still being around. An insurance-backed guarantee is underwritten separately, so if the installer stops trading the cover still stands. For a door you expect to use for many years, having both is the sensible position.

Our work is covered by a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee through our Assure certification. We are also FENSA registered, so the installation is certified for Building Regulations and you receive the paperwork you will need when you come to sell the house.

    Keeping your guarantee valid

Most terms ask for reasonable care rather than anything complicated. Clean the skin and frame with warm soapy water rather than solvents, keep the lock mechanism lightly lubricated, and do not force the handle if the door starts to catch. Report a fault early instead of living with it, because a small hinge adjustment made in good time is far easier than dealing with a lock damaged by months of forcing.

Keep the paperwork together: the quote, the invoice, the guarantee certificate and the FENSA certificate. If you move house, check whether the guarantee transfers to the new owner, since that can be a selling point.

Questions to ask before you order

Before you choose a composite door, ask who issues each part of the guarantee, whether it is insurance-backed, what the exclusions are, and who you call first if there is a problem. You should get straight answers. Our own fitters install every door, never subcontractors, so the team that fits it is the team that stands behind it.
