What a proper window or door quote should contain

Almost every dispute in this trade traces back to a quote that was a price rather than a description. The remedy is boring and effective: insist that the document says what you are buying. Here is the checklist we work to on our own paperwork.

    The short answer

A quote should name the product specification, state that removal, disposal, making good and the certificate are included, identify the cylinder or glass standard, give a fixed total rather than a range, and set out the deposit terms and the guarantee. If any of those are missing, they are negotiable later, and not in your favour.

    The eleven line checklist

Print this and mark each quote against it. A quote that satisfies all eleven can be compared fairly with another that satisfies all eleven. Anything else is a comparison between different jobs.

    • Exact product specification, including core thickness or glass build
    • Whether the frame is being replaced, not just the door or sash
    • Cylinder standard for doors, glass type for windows
    • Number and position of opening sashes, per window
    • Removal of the existing units and disposal of all waste
    • Making good internally and externally at every reveal
    • The building regulations certificate on completion
    • One fixed total, not a range and not per unit for a bay
    • Deposit amount, what it secures and the cancellation window
    • Guarantee length, what it covers and whether it is insurance-backed
    • Expected lead time and the number of days on site

    The three phrases worth querying

Subject to survey on a quote given without a survey means the price can move. Prices from means the figure quoted may not be the figure for your opening. Guarantee, unqualified, may mean a manufacturer's promise that dies with the company rather than insurance-backed cover that does not.

None of these are automatically dishonest. They just need turning into specifics before you sign anything.

    How we quote

A free measured survey normally within 5 days, then a written quote with one fixed figure covering the product, the labour, the removal, the disposal, the making good and the certificate. The guarantee is 10 year insurance-backed and transferable if you sell.

We are family run with over 40 years behind us and the fitters on the job are our own team, which is why the quote and the work match. We are open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm, so the survey can be at a weekend.

    Compare us against the checklist

Ask for our written quote and mark it against all eleven lines. That is the standard we work to on every job.
