Triple glazing cost, and when it is worth paying for
Short answer
Our triple glazed casements start from £610 per window fully fitted, against £450 for a standard A rated double glazed uPVC window, so the upgrade is roughly £160 per window at the starting size. It pays back best on cold, north facing or exposed rooms and busy roads. On a sheltered elevation, good double glazing is usually enough.
Where the extra money goes
A triple glazed unit adds a third pane of glass and a second sealed cavity. That means more glass, more gas fill and a thicker unit, which in turn needs a frame and sash designed to take the extra depth. The unit is also heavier, so hinges and hardware are chosen to carry the weight without the sash dropping over time. Those parts, not a markup, are why triple costs more.

Rooms where it earns its keep
- North facing rooms that never get direct sun
- Exposed elevations that take the prevailing wind
- Bedrooms on a busy road, where the extra pane helps with noise
- Rooms with large glazed areas that feel cold to sit next to
- Homes where you are also improving insulation elsewhere
Where double glazing is usually enough
A modern double glazed unit with a low E coating, argon fill and warm edge spacer is already a large step up from windows fitted 20 or 30 years ago. On a sheltered, south facing elevation, the extra saving from a third pane is small compared with its cost, and the extra weight brings no benefit. Many of our customers choose triple only for the coldest rooms and double elsewhere, which keeps the whole house total down.
Other things to know before you choose
Triple glazed units let in slightly less light and solar warmth than double, which matters little on a north wall but is noticeable on a sunny one. Very large sashes can become heavy enough to limit the size of an opener. We look at each opening at survey and price double and triple side by side, window by window, so you can decide where the upgrade goes.
