Why uPVC doors are specified the way they are

uPVC doors carry an unfair reputation built on what the market sold in the nineties: thin, unreinforced, with a cylinder that could be snapped in seconds. A current uPVC doorset with a reinforced leaf and a 3 star cylinder is a different product, and for a back or side door it is very often the sensible spend.

The specification we fit as standard

A reinforced multi chamber PVCu outer frame with a panel or glazed sash, steel reinforced in the leaf as well as the frame. The reinforcement in the leaf is what separates a door that stays square from one that bows in summer. Multi point hook and roller locking into reinforced keeps, TS007 3 star cylinder fitted as standard on our doors, and laminated glass in glazed panels rather than plain toughened. Good, though a hollow chambered panel does not match a 70mm solid core. On a back door protected by a porch or a lean to, the practical difference is small.

• Where we would steer you away is a fully exposed front entrance on a prominent house, because that is where the solid core and the weight of a composite door genuinely earn their money. Everywhere else, the argument for spending twice as much gets thin quickly, and we would rather tell you that than sell up.
